New Delhi – Authorities have registered a case of alleged gang‑rape involving a 17‑year‑old girl in the Astha Kunj vicinity of Delhi’s Kalkaji Temple. Three suspects have been taken into custody, and one of them – 34‑year‑old Asif of Tughlakabad – was shot during a police encounter and is currently receiving treatment at AIIMS Trauma Centre.
How the incident unfolded
The teenager, accompanied by a younger male friend, visited Kalkaji Temple for prayers before entering Astha Kunj Park through Gate No 7. According to police, three men approached the pair, claimed to be law‑enforcement officers, and threatened them.
The alleged perpetrators allegedly separated the girl from her companion and led her to a secluded spot. Witnesses say Asif brandished a weapon and forced the girl into a sexual act, while the other two men participated in the assault. After the crime, the trio fled the scene.
Police response and subsequent encounter
Following a tip‑off, officers from Amar Colony Police Station arrived at Astha Kunj, escorted the victim to AIIMS for a medical examination and secured the area for forensic analysis.
While tracking Asif, police located him near DM Office Road in Amar Colony. When officers attempted to apprehend him, Asif allegedly opened fire, discharging three rounds. One bullet struck the bullet‑proof vest of Head Constable Rajesh, prompting the constable to return fire in self‑defence. A shot hit Asif’s leg, and he was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment.
Legal actions and ongoing investigation
An FIR has been filed, and a comprehensive investigation is underway. Officials have confirmed the victim’s age to be between 16 and 17 years, and her medical examination has been completed. The remaining two suspects have also been detained, and further questioning is in progress to reconstruct the full sequence of events.
"We are committed to delivering justice for the victim and will pursue every lead to bring the perpetrators to account," said a senior police spokesperson.
