New Delhi – Delhi police have taken a 56‑year‑old man into custody after a Class 6 student reported being sexually assaulted inside a shop in the bustling Sadar Bazar neighbourhood.

How the incident unfolded

The victim, a young girl studying in the sixth grade, stepped out of her home to buy school supplies. According to the investigating officers, she entered a local stationery store where the accused, identified as Maqsood, allegedly restrained her by tying her hands and feet before committing the sexual assault.

Legal action taken

Following the girl’s complaint, the women’s police station registered a FIR covering sections of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to rape, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and unlawful confinement.

"I was terrified and could not move. He tied me and then…" – a statement attributed to the child, recorded by police.

On Friday, officers apprehended Maqsood at his residence. The investigation remains active, with forensic teams collecting DNA samples, CCTV footage, and other evidence to substantiate the charges.
