Dehradun. The monsoon has kicked back into high gear across Uttarakhand, with the state’s Meteorological Centre issuing warnings for heavy to very heavy rain from 26 September through 28 September. Some locales may even see extremely heavy showers, prompting red and orange alerts in several districts.
At the same time, fresh snowfall has blanketed Hemkund Sahib, causing temperatures at the high‑altitude shrine to plunge sharply.
Dr. C.S. Tomar, Chief Scientist at the Meteorological Centre, explained that a depression lingering over southern Odisha and adjoining parts of southern Chhattisgarh is drifting north‑north‑westward, potentially intensifying rainfall over Uttarakhand on 26‑27 September.
Red Alert for Five Districts on 26 September
Red alerts have been declared for Bageshwar, Nainital, Pithoragarh, Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar, where heavy to very heavy rain—and in isolated spots, extremely heavy rain—are expected.
Orange alerts cover Dehradun, Pauri, Chamoli, Rudraprayag and Almora, where heavy to very heavy rain is also forecast.
Rainfall to Persist on 27 September
On 27 September, Dehradun, Tehri, Haridwar and Pauri are likely to endure heavy to very heavy rain, with isolated pockets possibly experiencing extremely heavy downpours. These districts remain under a red alert.
Nainital, Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Rudraprayag are also slated for heavy to very heavy rain, accompanied by winds of 30‑40 km/h, and have been placed under orange alerts.
Further Showers Expected on 28 September
Rain activity is set to continue on 28 September, especially in parts of Uttarkashi, Haridwar and Dehradun. Thunderstorms and intense rain bursts may affect isolated locations.
Landslides and Flash Floods Pose a Threat
The Meteorological Centre cautions that light to moderate landslides and falling rocks could occur in vulnerable hill zones during the heavy rain spells. Road and highway networks may face disruptions, while rising river levels and sudden flash floods could threaten low‑lying areas.
Temporary structures, bridges and construction sites are at risk, and essential services such as electricity and drinking‑water supply might be impacted in certain pockets.
Impact on Char Dham Pilgrimage and Helicopter Operations
The prolonged heavy rain may affect the Char Dham Yatra, mountaineering activities and helicopter services. Pilgrims and tourists are urged to stay vigilant and avoid travel through high‑risk zones unless absolutely necessary.
Authorities advise the public to stay away from swollen rivers, streams and drains, refrain from boating during heavy rain, remain indoors during intense showers, and avoid crossing areas affected by active landslides.
