Bareilly: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s latest Rajya Sabha list, which omits Union Minister of State B. L. Verma, has set Rohilkhand abuzz, especially in Badaun and neighbouring districts.

Re‑positioning the Lodh leadership

Verma, a senior Lodh leader from Badaun, is slated to complete his Upper House term in November. The party has instead elevated Uttar Pradesh minister and Aonla MLA Dharmapal Singh, a move analysts read as a calculated shift before the upcoming state elections.

Hailing from Jyora Parwala village in the Bilsi Assembly segment, Verma entered the Rajya Sabha in November 2020 and currently holds the portfolio of Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. His removal has triggered a fresh debate about the BJP’s next steps in the region.

Political observers argue that Singh’s nomination is designed to lock in the Lodh vote bank while presenting another seasoned face from the same community. Verma’s historic alliance with former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh, and his long‑standing rivalry with Kalyan’s son, former Etah MP Rajveer Singh, add further layers to the intra‑community contest.

By moving Singh to the Upper House, the BJP may be seeking to consolidate Lodh support across western Uttar Pradesh.

Implications for Aonla’s political landscape

The reshuffle could reverberate in the Aonla constituency, long dominated by Rajput influence. Party strategists might contemplate fielding a high‑profile Rajput candidate there in the forthcoming assembly poll.

Having repeatedly won the Aonla seat, Dharmapal Singh’s elevation opens a window for the BJP to rethink its candidate lineup for the area, underscoring the persistent relevance of caste and regional balance in its electoral calculus.

Will B.L. Verma stage a comeback?

With his Rajya Sabha tenure drawing to a close, speculation is rife that Verma could re‑enter frontline politics via a direct contest. Insiders suggest he may be earmarked for a legislative assembly ticket from his home turf.

Verma’s stronghold lies in Ujhani, part of the Bilsi Assembly constituency, currently represented by BJP MLA Harish Shakya. Nearby Badaun city is held by BJP MLA Mahesh Chandra Gupta. Deploying Verma in a contest there could ignite internal competition while leveraging his organisational acumen for the party’s campaign.

Verma’s pledge of loyalty

Despite being left off the Rajya Sabha roster, Verma has maintained a measured tone. He confirmed that his term ends in November and that he will embrace any role the party entrusts to him.

"I remain a disciplined worker of the party and am ready to take up any responsibility assigned by the organization," he said.

The fresh Rajya Sabha nominations therefore open several possibilities in Rohilkhand—ranging from a reshuffle of local leadership to evolving caste dynamics and potential adjustments in assembly‑level candidate selection as Uttar Pradesh approaches its next election.
