Dehradun – A shocking episode of an alleged attempt to force a woman into a moving car unfolded in broad daylight near Nalapani Chowk, the capital’s bustling hub. The incident went viral on social media, prompting the Uttarakhand State Women’s Commission to take suo motu cognizance.
What happened?
On Wednesday morning, a resident of the Nalapani Chowk neighbourhood was riding her scooter home after seeing her daughter board the college bus. Several masked men in a black sedan shadowed her route and, according to eyewitnesses, tried to pull her inside the vehicle.
Immediate intervention
The woman fought back, managing to escape the assailants’ grasp. Nearby, a group of female sanitation workers from the Municipal Corporation witnessed the struggle and rushed to intervene. Their swift action forced the suspects to flee the scene.
Commission’s response
Commission Chairperson Kusum Kandwal immediately contacted SP (Rural) Jaya Baluni and Circle Officer Vandana Verma. The police confirmed that a case has been lodged at Raipur police station under the relevant sections and that an investigation is underway.
Police investigation
Three special investigation teams have been formed to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. Authorities are scrutinising CCTV footage from the crime spot and surrounding areas to trace the vehicle and the masked individuals.
Chairperson’s directives
Kandwal instructed law‑enforcement to pursue every possible lead – be it an old rivalry, a personal dispute, or an organised criminal plot. She praised the victim’s courage and the bravery of the sanitation workers, urging a rapid and decisive legal response to safeguard women’s security.
Ongoing monitoring
The Women’s Commission pledged to keep a close watch on the progress of the investigation, insisting that any act that threatens women’s safety must be dealt with stringently and in accordance with the law.
