Agra: The Uttar Pradesh police have taken a woman into custody in connection with a violent assault reported almost eleven months ago in Barhan, Agra district.
Investigators allege she assaulted her brother‑in‑law after he supposedly refused to marry her sister.
Incident Occurred on October 20, 2025
According to the FIR, the attack happened in the early hours of 20 October 2025, shortly after Diwali celebrations. The victim, employed as a chemical assistant engineer at a cement plant in Haldwani, had returned home for the festival.
Victim Attacked Inside a Room
The complaint states that the man was sleeping outside the house following the Diwali puja when his sister‑in‑law allegedly summoned him to a bedroom at around 2 a.m. She then allegedly struck him with a blade, inflicting serious wounds.
His cries woke other family members, who rushed to his side. Police arrived, secured the victim and transported him to SN Medical College for emergency care. Because of the gravity of his injuries, he was later shifted to AIIMS Delhi.
Accused Evaded Police for Months
After the assault, the woman’s husband is reported to have taken her back to her parental home in Etah. She stayed away from the village and remained out of reach of investigators.
Persistent police efforts eventually located her and she was arrested from a relative’s residence.
Attempt‑to‑Murder Charge Filed
DCP West Zone Aditya Singh said the medical report confirmed that the injuries were severe and could have been fatal. Consequently, the case has been upgraded to include an attempt‑to‑murder charge.
The probe into the motives and circumstances surrounding the attack is ongoing.
