New Delhi – On 6 October, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that left‑handed opening bat Smriti Mandhana will take over as the full‑time captain of the Indian women’s cricket side, succeeding Harmanpreet Kaur.

Mandhana’s International Rise

Since making her debut on the world stage in 2013, Mandhana has evolved into one of the most prolific run‑scorers in women’s cricket, featuring across Tests, ODIs and T20Is. She has already captained India in 18 T20 Internationals and four One‑Day Internationals, and spent several seasons as vice‑captain. The BCCI cited this blend of experience and deep familiarity with the squad as a decisive factor in her elevation.

WPL Success with Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Beyond the national team, Mandhana has shone in franchise cricket. As the leader of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, she guided the side to Women’s Premier League championships in 2024 and again in 2026, cementing her reputation as a tactically sharp and inspiring captain.

Harmanpreet’s Enduring Influence

Harmanpreet Kaur will remain a regular member of the playing XI but will hand over the captaincy. During her tenure she steered India to its first Women’s ODI World Cup victory in 2025 and clinched gold at the Asian Games, captaining across all three formats.

Looking Ahead

Mandhana’s first assignment as permanent skipper will be a series against Zimbabwe, beginning with three T20Is followed by three ODIs on 16 October. The BCCI expressed confidence that her extensive international exposure, prior leadership experience, and proven WPL success will drive the team forward.
