Revised rates affect APL ration beneficiaries
Within Himachal Pradesh’s Public Distribution System, the charges for two essential commodities have been lifted for households holding Above Poverty Line (APL) cards. Sugar will now be priced at Rs 52 per kilogram, up from the earlier Rs 48. The cost of urad dal has also been adjusted, moving from Rs 112 to Rs 117 per kilogram.
The amendment arrives just as the festive season intensifies household spending, with a heightened demand for sweets, snacks, and traditional recipes. The higher sugar price, in particular, could strain family budgets as more confectionery is prepared for celebrations.
Stock shortages at select government warehouses
In tandem with the price changes, several public storage points are reporting inventory gaps. Sources from a few districts reveal that urad dal and mustard oil have been exhausted at certain depots, temporarily limiting the flow of these items to ration shops.
These supply hiccups add another layer of worry for shoppers, especially as the pre‑holiday rush magnifies the need for staple foods.
Additional kilogram of flour eases the pinch
To cushion the impact of rising prices, the state government has introduced a modest relief measure for all ration‑card holders. Throughout October, beneficiaries will receive one extra kilogram of wheat flour, raising the monthly allotment to 13 kg instead of the usual 12 kg.
This supplementary kilogram is meant to alleviate the financial strain on families, offering a small buffer as they cope with higher sugar and urad dal costs.
For APL families, the new rates translate into a larger outlay when purchasing these items through the public distribution network. Coupled with intermittent supply disruptions at some depots, the festive period presents a tougher budgeting scenario for ration consumers across Himachal Pradesh.
