New Delhi – After a six‑year spell at the helm, India’s women’s cricket captain Harmanpreet Kaur announced on Tuesday that she will relinquish the leadership of the Test, ODI and T20 squads to devote herself entirely to her role as a player.

An Era of Leadership Draws to a Close

Now 37, Kaur has been a cornerstone of Indian women’s cricket, having led the side in five Tests, 51 ODIs and 155 T20 internationals. One of the highlights of her tenure arrived last month, when she helped India secure a second consecutive Asian Games gold medal in the women’s competition.

Her decision comes on the heels of the recent World Cup triumph, providing a storybook ending to a captaincy marked by both triumphs and trials.

The Call Followed a BCCI Strategy Session

The announcement was made a day after a strategic meeting in Guwahati that included Kaur, vice‑captain Smriti Mandhana, head coach Amol Muzumdar and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. The gathering focused on the long‑term roadmap for the Indian women’s team, and Kaur’s statement adds a crucial piece to the transition plan.

Team First, Personal Ambitions Secondary

Reflecting on her years in charge, Kaur emphasized that she consistently put the team’s welfare above her own goals. She spoke about making tough calls, enduring criticism, and always striving to build a more resilient unit.

She also underscored the need to open pathways for younger talent, acknowledging that not every decision would please everyone, but that the overarching aim was the squad’s long‑term health.

From Setbacks to World Cup Glory

Kaur’s captaincy was a mixture of setbacks and landmark achievements. While she weathered defeats, intense scrutiny and pressure, she also savoured the pride of leading India on the global stage.

The pinnacle was undoubtedly the World Cup victory – a moment that now serves as a fitting bookend to her leadership and highlights the significance of her departure for Indian women’s cricket.

She expressed confidence in the depth of the squad and believes the side possesses the talent and foundation required to continue its upward trajectory.

Her Playing Career Is Far From Over

Stepping away from the captaincy does not equate to retirement. Kaur made it clear that she remains available for international duty and intends to keep contributing on the field, driven by her love for the game.

She thanked teammates, coaches, support staff, the BCCI, her family and fans for their unwavering backing throughout her captaincy journey.

While her era as India’s captain has concluded, Kaur’s playing career will continue, offering the team a seasoned performer in a refreshed capacity.
