Winter Pause for Gangotri Dham
Uttarkashi authorities have declared that the revered Gangotri Temple will lock its doors for the cold season on 10 November at 12:05 PM. The timing coincides with the auspicious Abhijit Muhurat and aligns with the traditional Annakoot and Govardhan Puja festivities.
Rituals Signaling the Farewell
The temple’s governing body, led by Secretary Suresh Semwal, confirmed the schedule after the ninth day of Sharadiya Navratri. As the final bells echo, the ceremonial palanquin carrying Goddess Ganga will be escorted out of the sanctum in a grand procession, accompanied by an Army band and chanting devotees shouting “Jai Maa Ganga.”
The Journey to Mukhba Village
Following the closure ceremony, the sacred palanquin will travel to Mukhba, the remote high‑altitude hamlet that serves as Ganga’s winter abode. The convoy is expected to reach Mukhba on 11 November, the day of Bhai Dooj, where a series of prayers and rites will be performed.
Pilgrims are invited to gather at the temporary shrine in Mukhba, offering their respects and seeking blessings throughout the six‑month winter period. This relocation ensures continuous worship despite the main temple’s inaccessibility due to heavy snowfall.
Seasonal Significance
The winter shutdown marks the conclusion of this year’s Char Dham pilgrimage season. While the high‑altitude location forces the primary sanctum to close, moving the palanquin safeguards the spiritual rhythm for devotees wishing to maintain their devotion to the holy river goddess.
For the next half‑year, Mukhba becomes the focal point of worship, allowing believers to stay connected with Goddess Ganga until the temple reopens with the arrival of spring.
